How to Write a Novel in 30 Days

You can write a novel in 30 days. People will try virtually anything if you say its only takes 30 days. The way to get started on this project is very easy; just take a piece of paper and write 1-30 down the side. Pick the 30 most interesting times in your life, by interesting I mean dramatic, the things that meant the most. It could be terrible things or the best things. The most dramatic things. And then after you made your list, pick the one that is the most dramatic of all. And that’s the first chapter in your book. Then pick the best 10. And those are the best, the first 10 of your book will be those 10.

Pick the least effective ones. Of course, I don’t think you have them, but if you did, that would be in the middle. Save the best for the last step. You grab them, so well and it will be with you because you were able to grab them, and then you handed it back. There’s the technical way that’s always a gimmick. Life would be no fun for me at all if it weren’t for gimmicks that we find along, relayed to me 7 or 8 years ago, to find this one.

The gimmick is simply this. When we walk and talk at the same time, we use the left and right sides of our brain at the same time. If you walk an hour a day, and talk, you’ll get to your chapter a day, in 30 days you’ll have 30 chapters. And if you talk fast, the faster you talk, the better. Your material will be less rewrites. If you can’t think of anything to say, you just jabber away, we both have that here, just jabber and it will take care of itself.

You’ll be shocked of how good it is. I won’t be shocked cause I know what you do here. Your book will be what you do here or maybe 3 of them. But which side of the book? You wonder, who, say at the beginning of the book, this is based on a true story, because it will be a true story. There will be 150,000 books to come out next year, most of them fiction, most of them lousy — no good for anybody except brief escape from reality.

Your books are viable, what you do here, what I heard here is viable, very viable, it’s rich. So, when we do this again, if we do this again, I wanna talk about how to write a poem in an hour. I write 20 poems an hour and throw away half of them, maybe 2 or 3 times but it doesn’t matter. And the ones that are getting published were all written that way and none of them ever, I don’t rewrite my poems.

And how to write a short story in an hour, same procedure, very easy, I can do it. Nothing stops us from doing these things except to keep saying you can’t do it, but you can do it. There’s a hell lot of fun doing it. Even those of you who have meaning in your life I guarantee you’ll have more meaning and you’ll get very excited during the month that you do this, very excited to richness that you have, all ready to go.

Sometimes the reason you’re stuck on your fiction novel is because you tried not to change something. I got stuck once because I decided my character had to be granted 3 weeks, no particular reason, that’s just the number I picked. And I got tangled up with the rest of the story thinking, but if 3 weeks passed, then, this wouldn’t make sense, and this wouldn’t make sense, and then I realized, she’s only granted 3 weeks because that’s what I wrote down. I can change that. So I did, and I wasn’t stuck anymore. So don’t be afraid of changing what you already wrote down. It’s okay, they’re just words.

I’d like to take a minute to write about the right way to write a book, or more accurately, I want to explain how there is no right way. I used to read every bit of advice I could find and I ended up psyching myself out a lot. I remember reading a very persuasive essay once that said, good writing never used forms of to be. I know authors who have blocked themselves because they were trying the latest method, or following new advice that counts results, or just trying to emulate authors they admire. Writing is such an odd profession. And we’re constantly searching for science that we’re doing it right. That we’re on track. And that’s why I’m saying in almost every writing video I make that the right way is the way that gets the work done.

I wanna reassure you because I found out all of these the hard way. It’s okay if your methods are different. The only real rules in writing are technical rules: grammar, punctuation, not using your favorite strawberry shortcake pad when you submit. You should think of everything else as suggestion; there’s no right way to write a novel. This really is an odd profession, and we really don’t get enough feedback. So I just wanna take this chance to tell you, if you’re writing, even if it’s only a few words a day, you’re doing it right.
